In the 2009 short film The Cat Piano, an anthropomorphic feline investigates the disappearance of his friends, all of whom are being held inside a musical torture device.

The award-winning animated short was directed by Eddie White and Ari Gibson and narrated by Nick Cave. It tells of a haunting tale about a conjectural musical instrument called the Cat Organ (or Cat Piano).

How it works is that felines are lined up inside the device, with their tales stretched out underneath the keyboard. Once a key is pressed, the kitties scream in pain, producing ‘musical notes’.

Though there’s no evidence that an actual instrument was built (we hope it stays that way), the concept for it led to the making of this beautiful and timeless short film.
