Olive – a Kinetic Sculpture

“Olive” is a motorized (kinetic) fishlike creature that turns its head from side to side, moves its fins and antennae, and swishes her tail back and forth. Her eyes are made from motorcycle taillights and light up and she has is a small electric light in her abdomen. through areas that are cut away, you can see her inner workings.

Chris Cole is a kinetic sculptor and abstract painter living and working in Bend, Oregon. His interest in reusing old machinery – including old motorcycles and bicycles – to create animal-like, mechanical art is derived from his fascination with the technologies and aesthetics of the industrial revolution. The organic shapes and smooth forms in his sculptures were carried forward from decades spent as an abstract painter, bicycle mechanic, and his belief in the intersection of design and the natural world. Self-taught, he began painting as a teenager. In the mid 1990’s, he branched into kinetic sculpture, for which he is now most recognized.
